Meet the Maker
My name is Sarah Hartung and I am the creator of Eunoia Artworks. I initially became interested in bookbinding about five years ago as a way to make my own sketchbooks and journals. The more I explored, the more I discovered the depth and range of the art form, and the more I fell in love with it. Book making combines a limitless artistic potential with a demand for focused craftsmanship. This practice is perfectly suited to my temperament and has become my primary focus as an artist. I enjoy playing with a host of different mediums, indulging my own restless creativity while producing something that I hope will be used by people to explore their own ideas and imaginations.
My books are made using a range of techniques including embroidery, mosaic, painting, wood working, and sculpture to craft distinctive covers. Many of these books also utilize upcycled fabrics and found objects. I feel that there is a special way that we relate to things like vintage photos, cassette tapes, and floppy disks, things we loved that have become obsolete. I aim to capture that nostalgic resonance while creating a new purpose for these outdated products. These unique covers are handbound with high quality paper into one-of-a-kind journals, sketchbooks, and photo albums. While the digital world is an incredible thing, I believe that there is an elegance to a handwritten recipe, a beauty in a crammed scrapbook, and a tactile pleasure in the soft leather of a physical book that can't be replaced. I hope to create blank books that will give people the opportunity to explore that pleasure.
